The Akabeko is a traditional folk toy from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture.
This version is slightly larger in size, with a bobbing head and a charming, handcrafted presence typical of hariko (papier-mâché) work.The red body, adorned with gold and black patterns, has long been associated with protection from illness and misfortune, and was often given to children as a symbol of good health.
Lightweight and full of character, each piece is hand-painted, making every expression slightly unique.
Beyond its role as a toy, the Akabeko brings a gentle warmth and nostalgic calm to any space it inhabits.
