DESCRIPTION

This is a wooden kinuta mallet believed to have been used from the Meiji to early Showa period.

It was traditionally employed for softening straw or cloth, serving as a practical tool deeply connected to the daily lives of Japanese people in rural and weaving communities.
Carved directly from a single log, the piece retains traces of its use — visible in the wood grain, cracks, and striking marks left over time.

The dry, weathered surface of the wood, aged through years of use, conveys a quiet presence that seems to carry the scent of earth, grass, and handcraft.
