- DESCRIPTION

This piece is a Hida Ikkanbari, a traditional craft from the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It originated as a rural folk technique for repairing baskets and wooden vessels, and later developed into a distinctive local craft. Layers of Japanese paper are applied over a wooden base in geometric patterns, then coated with kakishibu (persimmon tannin) for strength and durability. The reddish-brown hue and soft luster unique to kakishibu give it a simple yet warm presence. With natural waterproofing, preservative, and antibacterial properties, kakishibu has long been valued in Japanese life — used to protect utensils, furniture, and paper goods. This plate embodies one of Japan’s most poetic craft traditions, where practical wisdom and aesthetic sensitivity coexist in harmony.
