DESCRIPTION

This is a magnificent Itto-bori (one-knife carving) ptarmigan, a traditional folk craft from Hida Takayama, Gifu Prefecture.

From the front, it exudes a dignified presence, while from the back, it reveals a melancholic silhouette. Depending on the viewing angle, this charming piece offers different expressions, making it a unique and captivating decorative item.

This is a rare vintage piece from the 1950s to 1970s. In the Tateyama and Hida regions, the ptarmigan has long been a popular motif, and many such folk crafts were produced during this period. In Japan, the folk craft movement gained momentum from the 1950s onward, leading to an increase in simple yet powerful Itto-bori carvings.
