- DESCRIPTION
-
A sencha tray (ichimonji-bon) carved from a single piece of timber.
The gently undulating grain and deepened amber hue suggest that the material is likely mulberry wood. The piece is estimated to date from the early Showa period.
The underside is entirely covered with precise, rhythmic chisel marks. The uniformity of these strokes reveals the work of a skilled craftsman. This finish serves both as decoration and as a practical measure to lighten the wood and prevent warping.
A subtle luster has formed on the harder grain and raised portions of the carving, shaped by years of use. One can quietly imagine: was it placed on tatami, or perhaps on a low chabudai table?
The ichimonji-bon (literally "straight-line tray") is a slender form of tray used in sencha tea practice to arrange tea utensils and implements.
