DESCRIPTION: This hand-carved tiger is a traditional folk craft from Hida Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, made using the Itto-bori (one-knife carving) technique. The bold, faceted carving style gives it a strong yet charming presence, with an expressive face full of character.

In Japan, tigers are seen as symbols of strength and protection. The tradition of tiger figurines is linked to the Hariko no Tora (papier-mâché tiger), a lucky charm believed to ward off evil and bring success. This Itto-bori tiger carries that same spirit, blending power with warmth in its design.

A rare vintage piece from the 1950s to 1970s, it reflects the golden era of Japanese folk crafts, where simple, handcrafted beauty was deeply valued.
