DESCRIPTION: A small object crafted from a fragment of Yakusugi—ancient cedar from Yakushima Island. The contrast of growth rings and intricate grain beneath the rough bark speaks to the weight of time held within.

Yakusugi refers to Japanese cedar trees over 1,000 years old, found only on Yakushima, a subtropical island in Kagoshima Prefecture. Iconic trees such as the Jomon Sugi are now strictly protected, and most Yakusugi in circulation today comes from naturally fallen or long-buried logs, known as domaiboku. Rich in natural oils and renowned for its resistance to decay, Yakusugi has long been treasured as a premium material. Its knots, cracks, and patterns are seen not as flaws, but as expressions of nature’s quiet design—echoing the Japanese sensibility of wabi-sabi and the beauty found in practical forms.
